Sleeping With a Fan Blowing In Your Face

This recently in ON Fitness Magazine:

When you have trouble sleeping it may b edue to the mountains of constant stimulation that affect all of us on a a daily basis.

One slows down our bodies and the other speeds it up. Using a fan (I DO EVERY NIGHT AND JUST LIKE IT) will provide constant stimulation to the tiny hairs on your face and eventually the feeling forces your brain to ignore the sensation.

The result is a sedation or calming to the “excitable” branch of your nervous system.

I say give it a try!

  1. Hi Jim,

    I have a question for you – unrelated to this topic i’m afraid.

    I started at 165lbs about 4 months ago but i’m now down to 145lbs, which is great. i’ve been on 1,200 calories a day. I now only have about 6-8 lbs left to go but the weight doesnt seem to be dropping as it was a few weeks ago.

    when i first started i wasnt working so i was getting up at 9am, but for the last few weeks i’ve been working so i get up at 6am to workout in the morning, but I am finding that I am constantly hungry at work and quite low on energy. AND i’ve already had about 250 calories before 10am!

    should i increase my calories since i am up from 6am – I am reluctant to do this as I’m worried about gaining weight if i increase my calories (as i still want to lose afew more pounds).

    also, can you recommend the best after workout snack if you are on the go?

    p.s – you were right about Miami, i only gained 3lbs, i weighed in everyday and the food was lovely and healthy!…i got the weight off within a week after i got back.

  2. A few points:

    1. You must go to bed earlier if you are getting up earlier. Part of your hunger may be sleep deprivation as it causes your hormones to change and that results in increased hunger.

    2. Weight loss will slow, but it shouldn’t stop. I would probably urge you to increase your protein consumption.

    3. Best post workout meal includes both protein and carbohydrate. I love a measured out protein shake with a scoop of whey protein, a yogurt and some nuts, whole wheat toast and turkey, etc.

    Just keep at it. The scale should come down and I am so glad to hear that Miami worked for you.’

  3. thanks Jim, thats really helpful.

    one more thing: in your new book you say you shouldn’t go for prolonged periods without food, but what i have found in losing this weight is that if i dont eat after 7.30-8pm (except on odd occasions), the weight is guranteed to come off in a day or two. i go to bed around 10.30 most nights so i dont feel too hungry. if do get really hungry, i have a few nuts or something….so yesterday i weighed 145lbs and today i weighed 144lbs…

    do you disagree with doing this?

  4. Yes I do agree since you are listening to your body and do have a few nuts (perfect snack) if the hunger is strong. GREAT that you are down another pound.
