Sarah Ferguson Scandal
If you take a look at the picture of Sarah Ferguson, you will once again see a former spokesman who gained ALL the weight back once the paycheck stopped coming in.
When will we all realize that getting paid to lose weight doesn’t work. it has to come from within and YOU need to decide that now is the time for you to lose weight.
And I actually feel sorry for Sarah. They were reporting on Good Morning America that she virtually received no money from the royal family, post the divorce, so she is desperate for money.

Actually, getting paid to lose weight DOES work, as virtually every spokesperson loses weight when they follow a regimented program and when it’s their job to do so. The problem appears to be keeping the weight off, which is an issue with virtually all weight loss programs today, for the spokesperson and for anyone who followed the programs. The issue of weight control is multi-faceted and involves numerous factors working against us, not the least of which are an abundance of junk, fake and convenience ‘foods’ that mess with our hormones and provide next to no nutrition, and that eight of every ten messages we receive each day (including those for work) have us going to the TV or computer to participate. The issue is way bigger than attitude and willpower.

Have to agree and disagree. Here are my points:
1. Getting paid for losing weight DOES work, but then they gain it all back when the money stops.
2. Yes, keeping the weight off is tough for most, and that is why only 3% of people succeed after 5 years. But the major reason for that is that the vast majority of people feel they have “succeeded” and can therefore go back to their former ways. Wrong, wrong, wrong and if they weighed themselves each day, then the majority would not gain the weight back. I know from over 24 years of experience with success as that is the best way to keep the weight off.
3. Yes, there is food everywhere, just like there are clothes, cars, great food, jewelry, houses, you name it to buy. If you buy it, and can’t afford it, you go into debt and probably bankruptcy.
With regard to food, you just have to put a stop to it. I realize you can’t ask co-workers to put food away, but you can walk another way. Tell your family members that you will now have apples out on the counter. Take personal responsibility. We are bombarded in ads to eat. Turn the TV off.
I hope this helps. I know its a very confusing issue.

So … there’s a ’school curriculum’ being taught that’s consistently graduating students, and a few years later a full 97 percent of them have failed to maintain what they learned via that curriculum, and the fault is with the students?
Comment by Sara — May 26, 2010 at 12:13 am
That’s absolutely correct. The “curriculum” failed to give them the tools to maintain what they have learned OR the curriculum graduated them by a gimmick. They never really did the work (like following a crash diet that enabled them to lose WATER and MUSCLE, and then when the fad was over, all the water came back with a whole new crop of fat). That’s failure personified!
FYI – My students don’t fail if they listen to what I have to say and follow my advice and lose weight the right way.
i hope that makes things clear.

My point is … when there’s a 97 percent failure rate, there’s something wrong with the curriculum.

Jim, I just love how you tell like it is!

Jim … please take another look at the May 2010 Nutrition Action article “How the Food Industry Drives Us to Eat,” especially the Q&A section on p.4 titled “Are We Irresponsible?” and p.5 “Keeping It Off.” I would like to hear what you think about it, especially the irresponsibility concept. Thank you.

I think that at some point during any person’s transformation from unhealthy to healthy they must learn to love & enjoy the process of taking care of themselves! I truly believe this is the ONLY “secret” to forever success. If a person loves or learns to love the feeling of taking care of their body very little in life could derail them, however; if someone’s been counting calories or eating preportioned frozen meals or replacement shakes or whatever and they don’t LOVE IT, life will eventually crowd in with too many stressors and that thing they do to maintain weight loss will fall by the wayside because it takes an enormous amount of energy to maintain a lifestyle that is not enjoyed. We’ve all seen the depressing stories of significant weight loss and then regain so there is nothing about any number on a scale that’s motivating enough. And we’ve seen the celebrities lose and regain so there’s nothing about the whole world watching that motivating enough. It’s a little special place inside each person that has to be turned on – a simple desire to take care of oneself and the ability to find pleasure in doing so.

I’m going to put this on the main blog.

Thanks Bobbie, it’s not always the easy route but one when I believe in something, I let it be known.

I am in LA, so I don’t have access to the Environmental Nutrition piece, but I do remember the issue of our personal responsibility.
Look, I’ve said this before, but eating to me is like spending money. We are bombarded with food commercials, and advertising everywhere for the next, best house, car, sofa, watch, suit, dress, shoes, purse, boat, etc. We MUST be responsible and spend the money we can afford, the same way we need to be responsible about what we put in our mouths.
YES, YES, YES, there is now food everywhere, so your will power has to be stronger than ever before. Those who are up for the challenge will succeed. Those that want to succumb will.
My goal is to make the “feeling” of being healthy, and lean and in control more attractive than the cream puff.
And it’s an ongoing process. I don’t let me guard down very often, but hey, it happens to us all from time to time.

Lisa:
You are absolutely right. My second book, “Flip The Switch,” was all about the “internal” reasons to lose weight and take control of your health. No one can do it for you, and clearly, even monetary gains are only short lived. You have to want it and be willing to stick with it for the long haul.

I remembered the article too, but when I read it again this week based on your calling out of Sarah Ferguson’s weight, I realized there is quite a bit there that deserves further discussion regarding this issue of “personal responsibility.” I like and agree with Lisa’s comment above, but the Nutrition Action Newsletter article delves into the much bigger picture, and I’d like to see the points they make discussed. I will check to see if the article is available online for non-subscribers to read so we can all be on the same page. But suffice to say that there is reference to the “tobacco-industry playbook,” and I think it’s one of the finest articles they’ve published in that newsletter.

I agree with you, it was a great article, but it mostly stressed how the food companies KNOW what will make us eat more, namely the combination of sugar, salt and fat, and the fact that food is virtually available everywhere.
But, that’s now a fact and our current American reality. Given that reality, we have to find a way to exist without gaining lots of weight.
If you can’t find it on line, i know i have it at my Chicago office.
