I'm 4mo post-op and my PT today said it's OK for me to now start weight training upper and lower body with the exception of a couple areas I'm not quite ready for. He suggested doing two or three sets of ten reps at lower weight and to use the weight machines at the gym for convenience and consistency, as my body/muscles are in rehab mode and not ready for prime time yet. Even though some muscles and muscle groups are in decent shape, I had limited ROM and mobility and was limping for seven years prior to surgery, so there's obviously some musculoskeletal dysfunction to repair.

hi jim... just curious - i know you say that 1200 is the number to stick to when counting calories, but when i try that, i'm absolutely starving and end up eating everything in sight! would 1300 calories/day give me sufficient results (i'm 165, 5'6", looking to drop 20 pounds) - i feel like this may be a bit higher/sufficient to keep me going. please let me know as i'm ready to tackle this weight loss once and for all!

Glad you found me again. Since you did it before (lose weight), you will successfully do it again.

Keep me posted.

Sara:

Given the hip replacement, still do all the upper body exercises (and if you have to modify them by siting, etc., that's fine) and core and slowly, when you are given clearance from your doctor, include the lower body.

Jim, it has been a long time since we have spoken or blogged, but glad that I found you again.
I had lost over 100lbs and was doing great and then illness set in and put 60lbs back.
Felt like 2010 was the year to get back into the swing of things and saw Dr. Oz, and remembered your blogs about the wasted calories in juice. That is what made me look you up and I am so glad I found you and I am starting my bands and weights today.
See after all these years, you still left an impression on me and I have never had a glass of juice since.

It may take me a while to get up to full speed with the weights, given a recent hip replacement, but at least you've provided me something to work toward. So many diet & exercise programs don't produce the touted payoff, so it will be easier to get and stay motivated on a program that actually has a decent ROI!
By the way ... according to TiVo, the weight loss episode of "The View" is going to be broadcast again this Wednesday.

They were just saying in general the juice was a better option than most other drinks, which i strongly disagree with.

Sara:

Thanks so much for the kind words. It's tough right now to spread the "Non Gimmick, Non Fad" word, but the recommendations I give are ALL backed by research.

Keep me posted as to your ongoing progress. 30 pounds is not much to lose if you are consistent.
