Drs Oz and Roizen giving SHOCKING Advice on Good Morning America

January 4, 2010  •  12 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Just watched a segment on GMA with the “You-On A Diet” guys, Drs. Oz and Roizen.

I couldn’t believe that they are recommending juice on their program as we KNOW that liquid calories are a huge part of our obesity epidemic and that they don’t tip satiety mechanisms.

I also couldn’t believe that they didn’t discuss strength training as we KNOW that without it, you will lose muscle when on a diet.

So, sorry to hear the wrong advice right at the beginning of the year.

Jim

  1. Hi Jim. Thanks for keeping us posted on this stuff … although I think I’m getting pretty good about spotting it myself after learning about your program.

I’ve been reading all your books the past couple weeks since I saw you on The View, and have started noticing more and more how overweight a lot of people are, and just how many people are overweight. Yikes!

Also, I’ve never counted calories before, but have started looking at calorie counts and serving sizes of many foods, and realized just how much unnecessary, inappropriate and over eating I’ve been doing. Yikes again!

I haven’t been much of a pop or coffee drinker, but I can see how liquid calories could really pack on the pounds. I indulged in a couple of those fancy hot chocolate drinks at the coffee shop over the holidays, and wow. The description from the Caribou website is: “Our chocolate drinks are now handcrafted with real pieces of all-natural Guittard chocolate steamed into the milk. Because real is better.” LOL!

Fortunately, I’m “only” 30 pounds overweight, and can see that your program makes sense. It’s been ages since I did much in the way of strength training, but I do remember feeling great when I did.

I’m so glad I saw your segment last month (thanks to TiVo) and learned about your program. Your material is a good wake-up call and showing me how much of the advice out there about weight loss and KEEPING IT OFF is really just wishful thinking. Perhaps I am just ready to hear it, but your observations and recommendations really resonate with what my body seems to innately know.

Just wanted to let you know, and say thanks, Jim, for putting together a program I can get excited about and put into place for the long haul. I think this is going to be a very good new year!

  2. Jim,
I don’t watch GMA, so didn’t see the segment in question. I do have a question though – were they recommending the juice as a substitute for a serving of fruit, or as a substitute for water? I see your point if they are suggesting substituting juice for water, but if it’s as a substitute for a serving of fruit, I don’t see the harm (ie instead of an orange at breakfast, sometimes I’ll have 1/2c orange juice). Just my 2 cents!

  3. Sara:

Thanks so much for the kind words. It’s tough right now to spread the “Non Gimmick, Non Fad” word, but the recommendations I give are ALL backed by research.

Keep me posted as to your ongoing progress. 30 pounds is not much to lose if you are consistent.

  4. They were just saying in general the juice was a better option than most other drinks, which i strongly disagree with.

  5. It may take me a while to get up to full speed with the weights, given a recent hip replacement, but at least you’ve provided me something to work toward. So many diet & exercise programs don’t produce the touted payoff, so it will be easier to get and stay motivated on a program that actually has a decent ROI!
By the way … according to TiVo, the weight loss episode of “The View” is going to be broadcast again this Wednesday.

  6. Jim, it has been a long time since we have spoken or blogged, but glad that I found you again.
I had lost over 100lbs and was doing great and then illness set in and put 60lbs back.
Felt like 2010 was the year to get back into the swing of things and saw Dr. Oz, and remembered your blogs about the wasted calories in juice. That is what made me look you up and I am so glad I found you and I am starting my bands and weights today.
See after all these years, you still left an impression on me and I have never had a glass of juice since.

  7. Sara:

Given the hip replacement, still do all the upper body exercises (and if you have to modify them by siting, etc., that’s fine) and core and slowly, when you are given clearance from your doctor, include the lower body.

    Keep me posted.

  9. hi jim… just curious – i know you say that 1200 is the number to stick to when counting calories, but when i try that, i’m absolutely starving and end up eating everything in sight! would 1300 calories/day give me sufficient results (i’m 165, 5′6″, looking to drop 20 pounds) – i feel like this may be a bit higher/sufficient to keep me going. please let me know as i’m ready to tackle this weight loss once and for all!

  10. I’m 4mo post-op and my PT today said it’s OK for me to now start weight training upper and lower body with the exception of a couple areas I’m not quite ready for. He suggested doing two or three sets of ten reps at lower weight and to use the weight machines at the gym for convenience and consistency, as my body/muscles are in rehab mode and not ready for prime time yet. Even though some muscles and muscle groups are in decent shape, I had limited ROM and mobility and was limping for seven years prior to surgery, so there’s obviously some musculoskeletal dysfunction to repair.

  11. Sure, 1300 should be just fine. Good luck.
