Breakfast + Protein = Weight Loss

June 29, 2011  •  1 Comment  •  Uncategorized

Looking to lose a few pounds? Dish up a bigger breakfast. Recent research shows that a morning meal that’s 400 to 500 calories helps you feel full and may make it easier to stick to your diet. The secret ingredient: approximately 200 calories of lean protein, like eggs or low-fat Canadian bacon. “In our study, people who ate extra protein in the a.m. felt more satisfied,” says study author Heather Leidy, PhD, an assistant professor of dietetics and nutrition at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. “Protein keeps you fuller longer than carbs, so eating it for breakfast helps you cut calories all day.” Taking time for breakfast is one of the smartest things you can do for your health. Women who eat it every day are not only thinner, but they also have lower cholesterol levels and less risk for type 2 diabetes than those who skip it, research shows. That’s because breakfast foods tend to be high in health-boosting nutrients like fiber, experts say.

Two brothers just finished the three week detox.

Brother 1 – down 12 pounds

That’s a huge amount of weight, and remember, on our plan, it’s all fat as they kept their muscle. That’s why we call it a metabolic detox.

Another Blow to Steady State Aerobics – The Heart

 •  0 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Today’s “Wall Street Journal” reports that interval training strengthens heart patients more effectively than a traditional (useless!!!), continuous moderate workout.

Now this is intense, as in exercise at 85-95% of maximum heart rate, followed by periods of moderate activity in the 70% range.

My experience is that most people don’t even get to the moderate range, because we believe taking a stroll is going to do SOMETHING for our heart and our weight.

Once again, wrong.

You know, I’ve taken an inordinate amount of heat for my “Cardio-Free” theory, yet every time I open up a trade journal, magazine or newspaper, it seems that more and more research is supporting my theory.

Are you on board with me???

ALWAYS Eat Before Working Out

June 27, 2011  •  0 Comments  •  Uncategorized

And show this article to anyone you know who makes this terrible mistake and ends up burning muscle for fuel AND getting less of a workout.

Working out while hungry may fly in the face of conventional wisdom, but many athletes and gym-goers push themselves on empty stomachs in the belief they’ll burn more fat.

The idea, advocated in popular fitness books over the past decade, is that exercising on an empty stomach forces the body to dip into fat stores for fuel instead of the carbohydrates quickly available from a pre-workout meal or snack. But while it seems to make sense, research shows that exercising in this way doesn’t offer any benefit and may even work against you.

After reviewing years of research on the subject, a report published this year in Strength and Conditioning Journal concluded that the body burns roughly the same amount of fat regardless of whether you eat before a workout. But you’re likely to lose muscle by exercising in a depleted state, the report found, and without fuel to aid the workout, exercise intensity and overall calorie burn will be reduced.

One of the studies reviewed in that report looked at cyclists when they trained after eating and when they trained while fasting. When they trained with nothing in their stomachs, about 10 percent of the calories they burned came from protein, including lost muscle, the researchers wrote.

In a separate study published in 2002, scientists found an additional benefit from a pre-workout meal: Healthy women who consumed 45 grams of carbohydrates before their workouts ended up eating less throughout the remainder of the day.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Exercising on an empty stomach does not help burn more fat.

I think this article is well done and short.

Remember, the moment you think someone you love, man or woman, is having a heart attack or stroke, shove an aspirin down their throat as quickly as possible.

The “Starbucks” Factor

June 24, 2011  •  2 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Was in Starbucks a lot this past week.

If we put camera’s in ALL Starbucks, you would immediately see why people are the size that they are.

My order, shaken iced tea (I mix it up between the black, green and passion) with no sweetener. Then, I put one-half Splenda or Equal, as I alternate as I don’t believe in too much of any one artificial sweetener.

The larger people, double frappachino, extra whip cream, with a scone, muffin or cheese danish. I’m not kidding, I would just look at the person in front and back of me and guess the order would be right around those lines.

And sometimes, I was in there at 10:00 AM, or 4:00. Clearly, these weren’t meals, these were snacks.

I urge you to do the same. The next time you find yourself in a coffee line or in any concession line at a stadium, movie theatre, etc., check it out.

I bet you will agree…..

Getting Heat For My “Fat Acceptance” Blog

 •  5 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Wow, did I ever catch heat for that post. Here are a few points I need to clarify.

1. I did not come up with the term “Fat Acceptance.” It’s a movement that started a few years back and is gaining traction.

2. I generally don’t call people fat, as I was a f$%t person for the first 21 years of my life. Now, I may take a swipe at a celebrity or two, who blames their genes or metabolism when CLEARLY they were much leaner in the past. I also will take swipes at celebs who are using surgery to lose weight and are not being forthcoming.

3. But let’s be clear. The excess tissue that 67% of our population is carrying around 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year IS fat. That’s what that excess tissue is called.

I don’t want to piss anyone off with my posts, but just so you know, the more controversial I am, the more people follow my tweets and posts.

My goal is not to be controversial now is it to be popular by being inappropriate. No, my goal is to speak the truth, and that’s what this blog is all about. I’ve pitched many of my topics to major television shows and magazines and they don’t want to offend their readers. But, do they want to educate their readers? That’s the question.

Look, I took on the world when I said “NO CARDIO” and I will stand by that until the research and my work with clients/readers/followers leads me in another direction.

Oh, and I also get a lot of Sh$%t for the Dr. Phil comment. PLEASE everyone. Dr. Phil made millions upon millions of dollars with his weight loss books. The least he can do is stay lean, or is that asking too much from weight loss experts?

You tell me.

MIxing Exercise Up

June 23, 2011  •  5 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Truly amazes me how many people say to me “exercise doesn’t work.”

Please know, YES IT DOES!

It just has to be the RIGHT exercise.

Look, I know many people think that walking is exercise and I do not. I call walking “active rest.”

But real exercise, as in interval based strength training, appropriately shocking muscles and leading your body to change in weight and inches is truly amazing.

I’ve said this for year, but give it a try. You have nothing to lose….but weight.
