Liquid Cleanses

May 31, 2011  •  2 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Once again, I have more and more people telling me about their “cleanse.”

Now, they realize it’s a bad idea, but still cling to the belief that it’s really going to be fat, this time, and not be water and muscle.

People, it’s almost ALL water and muscle. You can’t lose fat that quickly nor did you gain fat that quickly. It’s just how the body operates.

If you feel a jump start, then eat really “clean” and stick to fruits, veggies and lean protein. Couple that with strength training and your metabolism AND your body composition will rock.

Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition

 •  2 Comments  •  Uncategorized

It was just horrible last night to watch that young girl brutally treated. It is TOTALLY inappropriate to make her exercise with that intensity and duration. Did you happen to hear that she was told to exercise three times a day? Can you imagine the abuse on her body and the long-term damage.

She was injured and I’m sure more injuries will present with time. Plus, it’s going to be interesting to see how she continues now that the cameras are off. If a spokesman deal comes her way, her odds will increase.

Remember, she weighed 369 pounds. Do you think she just liked cookies more than the next person? What about the psychological implications?

I wish her all the best, but remember, she only as a 3% chance of success.

Leisure Eaters

May 26, 2011  •  0 Comments  •  Uncategorized

I’m sitting at O’Hare waiting for my delayed flight and you can immediately tell that it is a holiday weekend.

The people are HUGE and are all eating. Honestly, I may be one of the only people without food in my mouth.

And they walk so slowly. It’s painful to watch.

The only happy people with be orthopedic surgeons who specialize in knee replacements. There is NO way the knee can withstand that extra weight.

You Can’t Out Train A Bad Diet

 •  0 Comments  •  Uncategorized

My firm has been saying that for years.

People say to me “I exercise so I can eat more.”

That is SO wrong and will only lead to weight gain.

Weight loss is 75% diet and 25% exercise, and the exercise must be strength training.

With 25 years of experience, do you think I know what I’m talking about???

Yoga

May 25, 2011  •  0 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Many people have been asking me about yoga and I wanted to respond.

To use just the phrase “yoga” these days is like using the word “exercise.”

You know I do NOT believe that most cardio is exercise. I believe interval based strength training IS exercise, but the rest is not.

Yoga could be deemed exercise if it is very aggressive and it progresses. You can’t keep doing the same exercise over and over and progress. You have to make it harder by holding the pose longer, increasing the intensity by performing it better or going to class more often. This is with regard to weight loss.

As for stress relief and breath, i LOVE yoga. I also like the hot yoga, but you have to be with a teacher that knows how to make it harder over time. You just can’t keep doing the same class and expect it to show real results. You have to make it harder and again, intensity is key.

I do yoga about one a week. I do a “flow” yoga that kicks my a$$$s.

Don’t Eat While Distracted

May 24, 2011  •  1 Comment  •  Uncategorized

Loud noise, the tv, an annoying family member can ALL cause you to overeat as people tend to eat more when they are distracted.

Turn off the noise and you will naturally turn down your hunger.

Kettlebells Burn MORE Calories Than Almost Any Other Form Of Exercise

 •  2 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Kettlebells burn 20 calories a minute compared to:

Spinning – 14.3

Rowing – 11.5

Elliptical – 9.8

Stair Stepping – 12.2

Swimming – 13.6

Running – 19 BUT that’s at a 7 minute mile pace that practically no one can do.

Celebrities Who LIE About What They Eat

May 23, 2011  •  3 Comments  •  Uncategorized

I happen to know from a number of publicity people that they tell their clients to order a burger and fries when being interviewed so that the interviewer will NOT suspect they have an eating disorder.

Do NOT listen to celebs who say they can eat everything. I remember Drew Barrymore saying that Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and her ate EVERYTHING while filming “Charlies Angels.”

WRONG. That would be impossible unless they threw it all up, which is not what I am saying they did. I’m just saying that the media is terrible when it comes to the truth about staying really lean. You have to work at it 24/7 or you will look like Janet Jackson does these days, and that “ain’t” good!

Prunes Work Better Than Psyllium Fiber

 •  3 Comments  •  Uncategorized

I am a HUGE prune fan. They are the #1 most nutritious food that you can eat. Surprised? I was.

Plus, they are amazing when it comes to regularity. I believe that if your metabolism is operating efficiently, you should be “going” frequently throughout the day. If you aren’t, then I would start by adding more prunes to your diet.

Just make sure they are not dried prunes as they are very caloric.
