The SIZE of Las Vegas

January 17, 2010  •  1 Comment  •  Uncategorized

In Las Vegas this weekend and it is ASTONISHING to see the size of the average person. What I have observed is:

1. All you can eat buffets for $29 for the WHOLE day. It’s not just one meal. You can actually just sit at your table and keep going for the majority of the day. Scary.

2. Soda drinking. Wow, I haven’t seen this much soda consumption from so many people in years.

3. Lack of movement. There are tons of motorized wheelchairs in this city and I just can’t believe they are all for people incapable of moving. My take it is for many people who simply DON’T want to move.

If Las Vegas is called “Sin City,” then the sin is obesity.

Are Your Friends Making You Fat

January 12, 2010  •  12 Comments  •  Uncategorized

This in from Healthwise mag:

“Humans are social mimics,” according to Duke University professor and with more Americans overweight, scientists are very interested in subconscious sues that influence eating habits.

Here are a few:

1. The influencer is someone svelte who eats a lot and causes you to eat 1.5 times MORE.

2. Women consume 100 fewer calories when with a male date than with a female friend.

3. Optimists are more likely to give into temptation

4. Your husband as married women are twice as likely to be obese

Woman And Weight Gain

January 11, 2010  •  1 Comment  •  Uncategorized

According to David Kessler, in 1960, when ages 20-29 averaged 128 pounds. By 2000, that number reached 157 (and is probably higher by now).

Among women 40-49, the average was 140 pounds in 1960 and was 169 in 2000.

SHOCKING trend and my predication is that it will only get higher.

Obesity Shrinks Your Brain

 •  0 Comments  •  Uncategorized

According to University of Pittsburgh researchers, the brains of overweight subjects were 4% smaller than those at healthy weight and 8% smaller for the obese.

The researchers theorize that excess weight restricts blood vessels and lung capacity, depriving the brain of oxygen. The result is a prematurely aged brain.

Just think of these consequences for children and teens!

Sundays

January 10, 2010  •  5 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Many people I know WAY overeat on Sundays. Instead, workout, get some rest, plan for the week, do a little shopping and cook what will set you up for a successful eating week.

Without planning, most of us are doomed. It only takes a few minutes to make a HUGE difference.

Obesity is Now the Leading Cause of Cancer

January 6, 2010  •  0 Comments  •  Uncategorized

Article published in the “New York Daily News” shows that excess weight causes 1 in 12 new cancer cases. Researchers have linked larger waist sizes to certain forms of cancer.

For men, larger waist size increased the risk of kidney cancer.

For women, larger waist size increased the risk of endometrial cancer.

BUT, an article in the “British Journal of Sports Medicine” reported that those who participated in HIGH INTENSITY exercise were less likely to suffer from cancer.

Note HIGH INTENSITY. That’s means walking won’t help!!!

To Live Longer, Get Active

 •  0 Comments  •  Uncategorized

You should forward this to EVERY senior you care about:

Research from the Jerusalem Longitudinal Cohort Study followed 1,821 people born in 1920 and 1921 for 18 years from ages 70-88.

They classified themselves as sedentary or active. The active group moved for 4 hours a week or more.

Between ages 70-78, 27.2% of the sedentary group died compared to 15.2% of the active group.

From ages 78-85, 40.8% of sedentary died compared to 26.2% of the active.

From ages 85-88, 24.4 of sedentary died vs. 6.8% of their active peers.

And if they lift during some of those four hours, the benefits are even greater.
